On December 11, 2013, Regional Council approved a community-wide Climate Action Plan which includes a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 6% below 2010 levels by the year 2020. Development of the plan included collaboration with local municipalities who approved it in November, as well as a wide variety of community organizations, local businesses and residents over the past 18 months. Waterloo Region’s annual community greenhouse gas emissions were estimated at 3.6 million tonnes in 2010 and are expected to grow more than 17 per cent without the action plan by 2020 due to population growth. The plan also outlines other benefits including enhancing the local economy, energy security, cost savings for local businesses and residents as well as improving local air quality and public health.
